Access to the water mains is essential for the proper functioning of every household. Even before construction begins, it is necessary to find out how to connect the water mains. You also need to complete the necessary formalities and plan its installation, which depends on several factors.
Formalities before making the connection
Making a water connection involves preparing a number of documents such as drafts, contracts or proposals and presenting them to the relevant authorities. The first step is to obtain, or have prepared by a surveyor, a plot maps for design purposes. The resulting map is presented in the local waterworkswhich our plot of land falls under. On its basis, the company will issue the conditions technical implementation of the connection. (description of the site and technical aspects of construction, sometimes a plan for extending an existing water supply system).
- proof of ownership of the plot of land
- map for design purposes
- an application for the issuance of technical conditions for the construction of a connection - upon its receipt, we commission the designers to draw up an appropriate design
- a document stating the type of property and estimated water consumption
The water utility usually has 21 days for the issuing of technical conditions.
Work on the connection can begin 3 weeks after receiving an application with conditionsif, in the meantime no objection is raised against our proposal.
Assembly process
The construction of a water supply connection may be contracted out to to a water utility or a contractor with the appropriate authority. The municipal water utility will additionally designate the an inspector to supervise the construction work.
The process of building a water supply connection is based on pipe laying (usually with PE) with a slight slope, perpendicular to the main line and without kinks. PE pipes from which the connection is made are placed in the trench. Place single-layer polyethylene pipes in sand bedding. Multilayer pipes with external wall reinforcement are also available on the market (e.g. water pipe 32×3.0 SDR 11 RC), which can be placed directly into the ground (without backfilling). These are slightly more expensive, but allow for simpler and cheaper installation. It is important to remember that do not plant neither do not locate other architectural objects within 1 m of the axis of the connection.
The water supply connection must be fitted with a gate valve.
The water supply connection is usually plugged into the existing water mains using bore ties.
Formalities after completion of the connection
Once the construction work has been completed, all parties sign the acceptance report. Please notify the water utility of the completion of the work i consult a surveyorwho will carry out an as-built survey of the connection. The last step is signature of a contract specifying the terms and conditions of water supply to the property i installation and sealing of the water meter. How to choose a water meter we have already written in a separate article our blog.
What if we cannot connect the water mains?
If you still can't answer the question of how to connect the water mains because you don't meet the conditions, you can build a well. If a well is to be built, other formalities must be fulfilled. It is sufficient to report the construction of a well to the district authority and, if there are no objections, construction can start after 30 days. This procedure applies to wells with a depth not exceeding 30 m and a capacity of up to 500l/h. When constructing a well, requirements regarding the distance between the well and other objects such as a drainage ditch (minimum distance of 7.5 m), a septic tank (minimum distance of 15 m) or the plot boundary (minimum distance of 5 m) must be met.
