One of the basic sewerage components installed in every building should be a storm gate valve, which protects against flooding during heavy rainfall.
WHAT IS A STORM GATE VALVE?
A storm gate valve is nothing more than one of the components of a sewer system, which is designed to protect the lower floors of a house from flooding. Fitting such a gate valve is an excellent way of avoiding costly renovations.
STORM GATE VALVE - CONSTRUCTION
Despite appearances, it is a very simple device. The main component is a flapper, freely suspended in the body, additionally fitted with a gasket. When heavy rainfall occurs, the flap protects the house from sewage backflow. Under the pressure of the liquid, the flap is freely deflected, without disturbing the sewage flow.
TYPES OF STORM GATES.
Which gate valve we should install depends, among other things, on the design of the sewer network and the level of flood protection needed. The most typical type of gate valve is the single flap gate valve. Vertical gate valves will work well for non-standard installations where installation is only possible on vertical sewer pipes. To increase the protection against flooding, a two-lap gate valve can be used, and if you want special protection against rodents, you should install an end storm flap. All available gate valves can be found here.
WHERE TO INSTALL THE STORM GATE?
Most commonly, a gate valve is placed in the horizontal drain pipe that collects the waste water from all the risers in the house. Alternatively, a gate valve can be installed in a manhole made of plastic or concrete. However, do not forget that the installation location should be accessible for inspection. This is extremely important at the time of inspection or maintenance of the installation.
ADVANTAGES OF THE STORM SHUTTER.
Because it is simple in design, the gate valve has many advantages and virtually no disadvantages. Above all, it operates automatically without any additional power supply. Despite this, it maintains the full capacity of the sewer system. There is no problem with availability, as there are many gate valve models in different versions and diameters on the market.
ERRORS IN THE INSTALLATION OF STORM GATES!
- Burying the pipe-mounted gate valve along with the entire installation,
- Installation of untested, poor quality equipment ,
- Installing a gate valve in the frost zone.

SUMMARY
When building a house, the conditions for the design of the various installations are imposed on us by law. However, we should actually install anti-flooding devices for our own safety and convenience. Undoubtedly, renovation of the lower floors of a house after flooding is very costly, and this can be avoided by installing a storm shutter.
